New Philadelphia, O." This photograph shows the Civil War Monument presented by Major Henry Kaldenbaugh. In the background can be seen the World War I Doughboy memorial. Major Henry Kaldenbaugh served in the 51st infantry division in the Civil War, and left a bequest in his will for the construction of the monument to Union soldiers. The memorial is located on the corner of Broadway Street (Ohio Route 416) and High Avenue (Ohio Route 39) in New Philadelphia. Inscription reads: "Erected to my brave and gallant comrades of Tuscarawas County who fell in defense of our glorious Union, by a member of the 51st Ohio Vols. 1861 - 1865. Erected May 19, 1887. Presented by Major Henry Kaldenbaugh." Titled "Spirit of the American Doughboy" and "Copyrighted by E. M. Visquesney, Sculptor, Spencer, Indiana", this monument now stands in front of the Tuscarawas County Courthouse. It was erected in 1929 by the American Legion. Description: The photograph shows a portion of the Ferncliff Cemetery in Springfield, Ohio. There is a gently rising mound with a large number of gravestones, and on the crest of the mound there is a large stone monument with a metal statue of a soldier with a down turned rifle standing upon the base. The monument is surrounded by four cannons. On the back of the photograph, a caption reads: "Clark Co., Springfield, O. April 28, 1937 SOLDIERS' MOUND in Ferncliff Cemetery, with SOLDIERS' MONUMENT to Civil War soldiers in the center." The Ferncliff Cemetery was established in 1863 when a tract of 70 prime acres of land were purchased with $300.00 from each of the founding members of the cemetery for a total of $10,000. In 1864 the cemetery was dedicated. The Union Soldiers Monument is located in the Grand Army of the Republic Mound, sometimes called Veterans Circle. The mound houses the remains of 208 Civil War soldiers. The 9 feet tall monument by artist Henry Lowe is topped by a bronze statue standing on a granite base. The figure, modeled after the likeness of J.A. Bailey, was moved to Ferncliff in 1909, having previously been located in Springfield's Memorial Park. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Dated ca. 1930-1939, this photograph shows a World War I monument, topped with a Doughboy soldier holding a rifle in his left hand and holding a grenade in his raised right hand, in the foreground and a Civil War monument in the background. The World War I monument is titled Spirit of the American Doughboy and is copyrighted by E.M. Visquesney, a sculptor from Spencer, Indiana. It was erected in 1929 by the American Legion and now stands in front of the Tuscarawas County Courthouse, with an inscription which reads "In memory of the men and women of Tuscarawas County who served their country in the World War." Presented by Major Henry Kaldenbaugh." This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Original description reads: "Preble County, Eaton, Ohio 1936. Monument in Fort St. Clair Park. Inscription reads: "Erected by Wm. H. Ortt. Sacred to the memory of his comrades of the Civil War from Preble County Ohio A.D. 1931 (1861-1865)." The original Fort St. Clair was built in 1792 and used as a garrison and supply depot strategically placed between Fort Washington and Fort Jefferson. The main objective of the fort was to assist US troops as they tried to gain control of the Northwest Territory. In 1923 Fort St. Clair Park in Eaton was created to preserve this historic site.
